Based in Mississippi, father and son team of Wesley and Mac McDonald perform “soulgrass” music.  “It’s bluegrass, but it’s also retro-country/old parlor blues influenced  tunes, as well,” says Mac.  “We just love great songs with soul, and that’s how we do them-with soul.”

By his own admission, McDonald has an eclectic taste in his musical background.  “I listen to everything from old Delmore Brothers to Tony Rice to Johnny Cash to the Kentucky Colonels to Merle Haggard to Bob Wills and all points of musical light in-between.  I just love great songs and great music.”

Joined by his son, Wesley McDonald, the duo recently made their first CD together called James Hemenway.  “It’s a collection of soulful songs about real people, real life, and real emotion.  We do it bluegrass style, but we hop it up.  That’s why we call it hopped-up bluegrass.  I’d heard these songs and wondered why somebody hadn’t cut them already.  I feel fortunate to do them first.  No matter what you usually listen to, if you love great tunes, there is something for everybody on this CD.”

At IBMA 2005 in Nashville, Mac had the opportunity to meet Ronnie McCoury of the Del McCoury Band and visit for a few minutes.  "I expressed to him that we’d heard these songs from this particular writer, Susan Duffy.  We thought her songwriting prowess was exceptional and thought he might like to know about her.  We also told him we planned to go ahead and make our own CD one day.  His response was, 'You ought to do it then!'  So we did."

Whether it comes from the cotton fields in the Mississippi Delta or the West Virginia and Kentucky coal mines, when you can “feel” it, that’s soul…bluegrass soul.  That’s what these songs are about, and that’s exactly what WILD HARE is about-soulgrass.
